Description: Polygon shapefile representing the area underlain by shales with the potential for natural gas extraction in the Susquehanna River Basin. This dataset includes the estimated subsurface extent within the Susquehanna River Basin of the Marcellus, Utica-Antes, Burket, Geneseo, Mandata, Middlesex, Needmore, and Rhinestreet Shales combined. This dataset was created using New York geology from the NYS Museum, NYS Geologic Survey, 1999 and Pennsylvania geology from PA DCNR, 2001. To depict potential natural gas shale area within the Susquehanna River Basin, only display formations with a 'Yes' attribute for the field "GAS_SHALE".

Description: Regional background shapefile for the Susquehanna River Basin (2006 boundary). This shapefile was created using ESRI zip code areas provided in the ESRI Data and Maps Media Kit. Zip code areas used included Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Delaware, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Maine. Each zip code area was dissolved by the STATE field. All the states were then merged together. The Canadien portion of the shapefile was obtained from municipalities of Canada in the ESRI Data and Maps Media Kit. Part of southeastern Canada was selected out of the data set and dissolved. It was then added to the states shapefile. The Chesapeake Bay portion of the background file was originally cbsegs.shp from the Cheasapeake Bay Program. This file gives a more accurate representation of the bay than the one created from merging the Virginia and Mayland zip code areas. The remaining water bodies were created by drawing a large "box" around the background shapefile and then erasing the dataset from the "box" using the XTOOLS extension in ArcView 3.2. This erased box was then merged with states and Canada to create the regional shapefile. The 2006 version of the Susquehanna River Basin boundary was merged into the dataset by using the union tool in ArcView 3.2. The Chesapeake Bay polygon was updated to match the new shape at the mouth of the Susquehanna. The resulting polygons were named appropriately and the dataset was dissolved into the current dataset.
